Plum Beneath Snow, Note by Note
05 Plum Beneath Snow sets syrupy plum and spice over smoked oud and resin.
The contrast is dark fruit against smoke and wood. The note pyramid is one way to describe perfume, but these notes do not prescribe a fixed sequence on skin.
Plum: the fruit
The plum in 05 is syrupy: ripe, dark and thick, nearer to a preserve than to fruit eaten from the tree.
Spice: the heat
Spice warms the plum. The published note list leaves the spice unnamed.
Oud and resin
Smoked oud and resin sit beneath the fruit and spice. Natural oud comes from resinous agarwood; an oud note does not confirm that a fragrance contains that material. Oud Without the Mythology explores the subject.
Its neighbours in Chapter One
01 Before The Crown also pairs fruit with smoke, setting pineapple and citrus against ashen birch. 02 What Remains of Summer takes a mango-led direction, with pomelo, ginger, dry amber and vetiver. 05 keeps its dark plum over smoked oud and resin.
For amber in other settings, 07 The Last Golden Hour pairs it with blonde tobacco, bitter orange, dried fruit, rum, tonka and vanilla, while 08 Beyond The Horizon pairs amber woods with bergamot, ginger and smoky black tea. 05 sets its fruit over smoke and wood.
Choosing it
It comes in 10ml, 30ml and 50ml. The 10ml lets you live with it before a larger bottle, which is the case Blind Buying Is the Most Expensive Habit in Fragrance makes at length.
If you are torn between 05 and its neighbours, or choosing for someone else, write to Dave. For gift information, see Gifting. The scent guide sorts all eight fragrances by family.
