A
-
Amber
An accord, built rather than found: warm, resinous and faintly sweet, the colour of its name. It gives a fragrance its glow in the later hours on skin.
B
-
Bergamot
A bright citrus note with the aromatic sharpness of peel. In Chapter One it sits beside oolong tea in 04, orange in 06 and black tea in 08.

-
Birch
In perfume, birch usually means the smell of birch tar: woodsmoke, cold ash and a dry, leathery edge. A little of it darkens everything around it.
Found in01 Before The Crown
-
Bitter Orange
A fresh, bright citrus note. In 07 it sits against dried fruit and rum, the sharp edge over amber, tobacco and vanilla.
Found in07 The Last Golden Hour
-
Black Tea
Dry, tannic and a little smoky, like leaves left to darken. Beside citrus it reads as the cup itself, warm with a bitter rim.
Found in08 Beyond The Horizon
-
Blonde Tobacco
Cured leaf before it is lit: sweet, hay-like and honeyed, closer to dried fruit than to an ashtray.
Found in07 The Last Golden Hour
C
-
Citrus
Peel and zest, the sharp light of the first minutes. Citrus arrives fast and leaves early, so it opens a fragrance more often than it carries one.
Found in01 Before The Crown
D
-
Dried Fruit
Figs, dates and raisins with the water gone, so the sugar turns dark and jammy.
Found in07 The Last Golden Hour
-
Dry Amber
Warm amber with a dry finish. In 02 it lies beneath the mango, pomelo and ginger, and the fruit stays at the centre.
Found in02 What Remains of Summer
F
-
Fig
A soft fruit note. In 04 it sits with soft musk beneath the bergamot and oolong.
Found in04 Tea Beneath Clouds
G
-
Ginger
Fresh spice with a zesty, peppery edge. Three bottles carry it, each against something different: mango in 02, orange in 06, black tea in 08.

I
-
Iris
A soft, powdery floral note. In 03 it sits with orange blossom over soft, milky musk.
Found in03 Space Between Us
M
-
Mango
Ripe, juicy tropical fruit. It leads 02, beside bright pomelo, with a ginger edge over dry amber and vetiver.
Found in02 What Remains of Summer
-
Musk
Soft, clean and a little powdery, like skin that has been in the sun. Musk sits close and lasts; it is what someone notices when they lean in.
O
-
Oolong Tea
Half-oxidised tea, between green and black: milky, floral and toasted together. It smells of the steam above the cup.
Found in04 Tea Beneath Clouds
-
Orange
Sweet, juicy citrus with a fresh, zesty edge. In 06 it sits at the centre, with bright bergamot and a ginger edge.
Found in06 Sun Through Linen
-
Orange Blossom
The flower of the bitter-orange tree. Honeyed, white and heady, with a warmth that reads as skin.
Found in03 Space Between Us
-
Oud
Agarwood: dark, resinous wood with an animal edge. Polished and smoky in some fragrances, barnyard in others.
Found in05 Plum Beneath Snow
P
-
Pineapple
Ripe, sharp and syrupy at once. In Before The Crown, pineapple meets citrus, smoke and ashen birch.
Found in01 Before The Crown
-
Plum
Dark fruit with a winey skin. Syrupy on its own; set against spice and resin it turns deep and autumnal.
Found in05 Plum Beneath Snow
-
Pomelo
Bright, juicy citrus. In 02 it sits beside the ripe mango, over ginger, dry amber and vetiver.
Found in02 What Remains of Summer
R
-
Resin
Tree sap, hardened and warmed: balsamic, sticky and faintly sweet. The smell of incense before it is lit.
Found in05 Plum Beneath Snow
-
Rum
Molasses, oak and a boozy warmth. It rounds the edges of tobacco and dried fruit.
Found in07 The Last Golden Hour
S
-
Smoke
Woodsmoke, incense, the air after a fire has gone out. Three of the eight in Chapter One sit in the smoky family, each with a different kind.
Found in01 Before The Crown
-
Spice
Dry, warm heat that sharpens fruit and lifts wood. Spice works at the edges of a fragrance more than at its centre.
Found in05 Plum Beneath Snow
T
-
Tonka
A bean that smells of almond, hay and vanilla with a bitter finish. It makes a base feel soft and long.
Found in07 The Last Golden Hour
V
-
Vanilla
Creamy and warm. Beside tobacco and rum it reads as the dark pod more than dessert.
Found in07 The Last Golden Hour
-
Vetiver
The root of a grass: earthy, woody, often a little smoky, with a cool green edge. It gives a fragrance somewhere to stand.
Found in02 What Remains of Summer
W
-
Woods
Dry, warm woods that hold a fragrance up once the brighter notes have gone.
